Let's Learn to Crochet Together: I Learned The Rice Stitch From the Internet, But Of Course I Messed It Up

I am always looking to learn new crochet stitches. I came across a "very easy" simple stitch pattern that looked great, so I had to try it. Mistake number one, I only looked at the first tutorial I came across. It seemed simple enough, yet no. I messed it up.

I present to you : The Rice Stitch

It really is an easy stitch pattern.  I think the tutorial I followed was actually vague for something so simple. Here's my tiktok on how messy my first attempt was:

As you can see, it doesn't look right. The tutorial I followed did not, I repeat, did NOT state "front post double crochet" nor "back post double crochet". It was a pictorial tutorial without clear instructions and that threw me off, because I've done both stitches a lot of times.  The lovely #crochetersoftiktok gave me some good advice, as usual. So I've wrapped my head around it and here is my tutorial on The Rice Stitch. (US crochet terms are used)

Begin With :

Chain (ch) an odd number of stitches.

Row One :

Half double crochet (hdc), beginning with the 3rd ch from the hook, to the end. Ch 1 and turn.

Row Two :

Hdc in first stitch (st), front post double crochet (fpdc) in next st, *back post double crochet (bpdc) around next stitch, fpdc around next stitch* ... repeat  between * * until one st left and hdc in last st. Ch 1 and turn.

Tips :

• Each row begins with a hdc, then a fpdc. End each row with a fpdc, then a hdc. Always.
• After the second row, all fpdc go around a bpdc; and vice versa.
• If you get off count somehow, like I do... , remember those first 2 tips.
• If you wish to make a square, remember your first row was hdc to set up the pattern, just finish the square with a row of hdc. 

Repeat Row Two until desired height.

And there you have it, simple. Let's see if I have figured it out properly:
