Abbreviations and Basic Stitches

Any beginning crochet enthusiast needs to know the basic stitches, of course.  But also, if crocheting a project from a pattern, abbreviations will be used, and you'll need to understand what's been written.


Standard abbreviations can be found all over the internet, so I'm throwing my 2 cents in and giving you another page to look at for your abbreviation enjoyment. But I'm only going to give you the basics you need to get you on your happy crochet journey. 


Abbreviations

  • beg - begin/beginning
  • BL or BLO - back loop or back loop only
  • CC - contrasting color
  • ch - chain stitch
  • ch-sp - chain space
  • dc - double crochet
  • dc2tog - double crochet 2 stitches together
  • dec - decrease
  • esc - extended single crochet
  • FL or FLO - front loop or front loop only
  • foll - following
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • hdc2tog - half double crochet 2 stitches together
  • inc - increase
  • lp - loop
  • - marker
  • MC - main color
  • pat or patt - pattern
  • pc - popcorn stitch
  • pm - place marker
  • prev - previous
  • ps or puff - puff stitch
  • rep - repeat
  • rnd - round
  • RS - right side
  • sc - single crochet
  • sc2tog - single crochet 2 stitches together
  • sh - shell
  • sk - skip
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sm or sl m - slip marker
  • sp - space
  • st - stitch
  • tch or t-ch - turning chain
  • tog - together
  • tr - treble crochet
  • tr2tog - treble crochet 2 stitches together
  • WS - wrong side
  • yo - yarn over
